It is July 9, 2011, and a new nation is entering the world stage. Located in the southern portion of the former North African nation of Sudan, the creation of the new country, known as South Sudan, brings to an end a long and bloody war. Will Ross, described the scene for the British Broadcasting Corporation.

“Tens of thousands of South Sudanese have watched the raising of the new country’s flag at an independence ceremony in the capital, Juba. Salva Kiir signed the constitution and took his oath of office in front of the jubilant crowds, becoming president of the world’s newest nation. Sudan’s President Omar al-Bashir and UN chief Ban Ki-moon were among dignitaries watching the events. Sudan earlier became the first state to officially recognize its new neighbor. The world’s newest nation was born at midnight local South Sudanese time (2100 GMT), the climax of a process made possible by the 2005 peace deal that ended a long civil war.”

Behind the scenes, and before the flag rose over the new capital, Director Don Humphrey, and the Mt. Juliet Church of Christ, were hard at work putting plans for a leadership training school, and medical facility in place. The church is a suburban congregation near Nashville, Tennessee, and it maintains a high focus on missions. Construction on the new facilities was under way well before the flag was raised this past July.

Members of the Malawi Project were called in to serve in an advisory status to what is aptly called the Sudan Project. With a number of years of experience in medical work in Malawi, Suzi Stephens, the Medical Director for the Malawi Project, has helped in the design of the new medical clinic, and then represented the new Project to supporters in Canada, in order to obtain a 40-foot trailer of medical equipment and supplies. This first trailer left British Columbia in mid-September and is expected to arrive in South Sudan shortly after the first of the year.

Pictured: Sandra and Don Humphrey look on as Suzi Stephens of the Malawi Project, goes over the list of needed supplies and equipment, for the new medical facility.

Indianapolis, Indiana … During a recent trip to the United States the Right Honorable Joyce Banda, the Vice President of the nation of Malawi, made a trip to Indiana to express her gratitude for the work the Malawi Project has accomplished in her nation in recent years. During her time in Indiana she met with a group of businesswomen who have been able to create successful ventures in the Indianapolis area. Sharon O’Donoghue, the Executive Director of the Business Ownership Initiative, organized this meeting.

In late afternoon Dick and Suzi Stephens, founders of the Malawi Project, hosted a reception for the Vice President at their home on the Indianapolis north side. Over 200 people were in attendance during the four-hour reception. The guest list included people from Texas, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Tennessee, Michigan and Indiana.

In the evening the Vice-President was hosted by church elders and members of the Board of Directors for MIBI, the newest program in Malawi by the Indianapolis group. The new MIBI campus, now over 200 acres in size, will house an international leadership training school, pre-school and secondary school, agricultural training facility, and a medical facility.

From Kingdom to Protectorate and Beyond

A recent gathering in northern Malawi brought together all of the Paramount Chiefs of all of the major tribes in the country, as well as the current President of Malawi for the first time in history. The Angoni were dressed in tribal traditional wear, and it was the largest gathering in the past 100 years. The occasion was to celebrate the time 100 years ago when the Mzimba Kingdom signed a peace treaty with England and became part of the "East African Protectorate" later to be Nyasaland then under independence Malawi. The signing of the treaty was partly responsible for keeping Germany from cutting off the British during World War I. The ceremony was deemed "From Kingdom to Protectorate and Beyond." The big meeting took place about 66 miles back in the bush country away from the main road at the ancestral home of the Angoni people at Hora Mountain in northern Malawi.

Chief Asks that Bill Be Paid

During the ceremony Chief Mimbelwa II reminded the government of the fact that in 1902 the British were unable to pay their workers. The Chief loaned them the money to make payroll but the British have yet to pay the money back to them. He requested the funds be returned to them with interest. The President of Malawi advised them he would pass their request on to the British authorities.

Celebrating the Old and the New

According to Randy Judd, an American missionary who attended the celebration and did the photography for this story, "The celebration was a contrast between the old Malawi and the new. The Angoni chiefs and their "Inkosi ya Makosi" were dressed in skins along with all the male dancers. The president was dressed in a business suit. The big chief was sheltered in a small grass house until the festivities started, President Bingu was at a near by school. The chief came to the parade stand on foot being surrounded by about 400 men and women in traditional dress. The president came in a motorcade and had about 500 men and women in tee shirts; he also had about 10 guys carrying pictures of him. The chiefs came the night before in order to be on time; while the president came by helicopter to avoid the bad road."

Capital and Hospital

Although no evidence of its past is visible in the present the name “Salima” can drive cold chills down the back of even a novice historian. It was from Salima, during the dark days of the slave trade, that thousands upon thousands of people were sold into slavery and shipped away to places such as India and Arabia. They were never heard from again. At the height of the trade in human life it has been estimated that over 10,000 people were sold each year into slavery from the jumping off points at the notorious lake communities of Karangu, Nkhotokoka, and Salima.

Salima comes in on the population chart at 9th in the nation, with an estimated population of 22,440 in 2005.

Present day Salima is the commercial and trading center for the area near the lake, and the community is a major intersection for two tarmac highways. Highway M-5 runs south from Nkhotokota in the north along the lakeshore, through Salima and then it continues south until it curves inland to the west and links up with highway M-1 in order to continue an uneventful trip through the countryside toward the commercial center of Blantyre. Then the tarmac continues southward and exits the country into Mozambique near the area of Mount Mulunge. The other road, highway M-14 cuts its way through the Dowa Mountains after leaving the capital city of Lilongwe, then it inches its way through the bustling business section of Salima, and then it exits toward Senga Bay and the tourist resorts that dot the beach along a 10-mile stretch filled with guest resorts, fishing villages, and quaint living quarters for the well-to-do facing Lake Malawi.
