NEWS ALERT: DEVASTATING FLOODS TAKE OUT LIVES, HOMES AND POWER

I write with a heavy heart to share news of devastating floods in Malawi.

As of 9th March, 23 people had lost lives with 11 others reported missing. This has been as a result of continuous rainfall that lasted for 5 days. Those who died or are missing have either been washed away in the floods or buried in demolished houses.

It is reported 453,120 households, and over 2,226,560 people have been directly affected. This figure is expected to rise in the next few days as rains continue and the flooding affects more and more people.

Over 270 megawatts of Malawi’s 320 megawatts of available hydropower capacity is offline, according to a statement from ENGNCO.

Currently, food, beddings, and other household items are in short supply to the affected people.

Additional information will be shared as it becomes available.
