SHOES FOR TREES GET A FOOTHOLD

Mponda Village … While famine and food assistance have taken center stage in Malawi in recent months, the Shoes for Trees program has also taken a foothold in eastern Dowa Districtand the area south of Dedza.

Building on the success of the community warehouse at the first Joseph Project site, Action for Progress has continued with other successful endeavors. Most recently, the AfP team offered shoes to families who would plant tree seedlings, helping the people to reforest the areas around their villages, all for a new pair of shoes. As in other areas, the programs have been a success, and the AfP team, along with representation from the Malawi Project, passed out new pairs of shoes to those who participated in planting the tree seedlings. The new shoes were a donation from Walmart in America and sent to Malawi from the Malawi Project.

The trees in the Mponda area were added to a long list of tree programs that are helping offset the loss of trees from overcutting for food and family needs. A few days after this effort, a trip was made to an area north of the Dedza Trading Center, where a grove of over 85,000 trees reflected the success of the Shoes for Trees program.

You can help ship shoes to Malawi to help the village people, and to reforest the nation, by sending your contribution to: https://www.malawiproject.org/donate/
