Supplies Assist in the Efforts to Save a Life – Part II

In Malawi Hosptital

Continued from Part One

The following is the second in the series "Painful Events Lead to Serving Another" and is narrated by Samatha Ludick from Senga Bay, Malawi:

"I rushed Ndhala back to Salima District Hospital but he was afraid, and made me promise not to leave him alone there. I promised not leave him. I also promised to take care of him the best way I could. At the hospital I was able to get him an x-ray, then I discussed the dire situation with Dr. Ron Phiri. I kept asking to myself, ‘Why and how could this young man get into such a worsening condition while he had been in the hospital for the past 2 1/2 months?

The doctor patiently explained what I already knew. The hospital is in such short supply of drugs and bandages they cannot meet all of the need. He looked so sad. Or perhaps ‘sad’ is not the word. Maybe it is better described with the words ‘shamed embarrassment’ that he could not do more to help this young man.’ He was doing all he could under the circumstances. They all are. There is just not enough supplies.

The x-ray was completed, and Ndhala proved to be a very lucky young man. The infection had not made it’s way to the bone, and the next step for thePatient care - Malawi doctor was to put Ndhala to sleep and remove all of the dead tissue and clean the wound. Thanks to the Malawi Project and its supporters we were able to give the hospital the needed ointment and bandages.

Next came an HIV test. Again it is good news. He was negative. When the doctor completed his work we knew there was nothing more that could be done except pray and wait to see if it was enough to save his life, or least to save his foot and leg. Time will have the answer."

The pictures show Ndhala being taken to the surgery suite, then Dr. Phiri performing the surgery. The last two pictures show the condition of Ndhala’s leg at the time of the surgery.
