HOMES AND LIVES LOST IN MPONELA

Mponela, Malawi …One week after disastrous flooding washed away homes and lives east of the Mponela Trading Center, Action for Progress and local officials completed an evaluation of how many families needed emergency assistance and began aid distribution. Assistance has been quick and efficient for 42 households near the Kasangadzi River, listed as one of 33 rivers and streams overflowing their banks from the heavy rains.

ZBS News joined the Action for Progress team for the distribution. Reporting on its assistance for a national audience Zodiac News listed the value of the maize and clothes as 2 million Kwacha. Kasalika was quick to note the aid package was possible because of the joint program between Action for Progress and the Malawi Project in the U.S.

Mponela is located 60 km north of the capital city of Lilongwe along Highway M-1. With a population of nearly 25,000 people, the trading center is the boyhood home for Griven Kasalika, the administrative officer for Action for Progress, and the operational base for the early teams from the Malawi Project. Wilson Tembo, the Executive Director for Action for Progress, grew up near the Mponela center.
